Isobel's birthday is approaching- Oct 22- I'm dreading it but I'll have no choice but to be strong. It's hard losing a child who has been through something like Kassidy and Bella because there are so many anniversaries- Friday will be two years since our dreaded Hurler diagnosis. It's hard to believe that two years ago today I had never heard of Hurler's or MPS and I knew nothing oabout BMT's. Boy, does life throw you for a loop sometimes! (I saw the memorial in the newspaper) As a parent who has been in your shoes, I know how hard that first year can be. I lost my son Mitchell, to a form of cancer known as Neuroblastoma on New Years Eve 2001, after an eight month battle at HSC. I too live in Bowmanville and actually know Marlene Buttery, whom I saw holding Kassie at her christening. When ever im down I think about her smile and how happy of a baby she was, no matter how many times she was poked or prodded at she still had that big smile , and if she could talk she would be talking of all joyful things, it wouldn't take a scientist to figure that out no her smile told all, along with her eyes, I thought she had such wise eyes. She would look at people and things as to say ya I know all about that. I still have the bunny that I gave her, I would have done anything to make her smile, she was soo precious. I finally came to realize that there are no words, that can ever express the pain we feel by such a loss. Just as there are no magic words that can ever be spoken, to fill the tremendous void that her leaving has left in our lives. There was one thing that I couldn’t get out of my head and that was Kassies wonderful bright smile. Even when she was faced with huge adversity and pain, she was always able to smile whenever we came to visit. So I think that all of us could learn a wonderful lesson, from this little girl that has touched all of our lives. The next time that life seems to have thrown you a curve ball or you are being treated totally unfair. The doctors and nurses and health care workers and volunteers probably knew her second only to Carol and Dave and Kylie and Jamie. So what’s to be said of a life so short? – Of memories too few and too far between? My most vivid memories of Kassie will be these two: her smile – she smiled with her eyes; and her hands – clasped as though in delight, even as she slept. So although we mourn the loss of this beautiful child who brought so much joy to all who knew her, I prefer to remember those two things. Kylie and Jamie will tell you Kassie has her wings now and she’s watching over them, and her family and all the people who knew and loved her. She is having her up and down episodes of moodiness...probably due to the steroids. Still, she is happy more often than not.
